Who To Notify

Moving is stressful. It can feel like there are 101 things to do and take care of when you move. One aspect that is easy to overlooked is the need to update your mailing address with quite a few agencies and companies. To help you with this aspect of your move, I’ve complied a list of who to notify when you move. We used this list to make sure we covered our bases when updating our address.

USPS

Change your address online with the USPS at: https://moversguide.usps.com. USPS will forward your mail from your old house to your new address when you move. If you have a new address (new construction) it may take awhile for the USPS to recognize your new address. You may even need to submit your new address to Google Maps to help speed up the process.

DMV

Most states require that you update your mailing address within 30 days of moving. You can find your local DMV through this link: https://www.usa.gov/motor-vehicle-services

IRS

You will likely need to fill out and mail in a Form 8822 to the IRS to notify them of your move. Often times the USPS will not forward government issued checks. If you have a home-based business, you will also need to send in a Form 8822-B.

Social Security Administration

If you get Social Security or Medicare benefits you will need to contact the Social Security Administration to update your address, go to my Social Security online to change your address. If you get Supplemental Security Income, contact your local Social Security office.

Utility Companies

It is a good idea to call the water/sewer, irrigation, power, natural gas, etc. companies to notify them of your move date. Be sure to notify them that one you are moving out of a residence (to stop service) and then you will also need to transfer/start service.

Phone/Cable/Internet

It’s a good idea to notify your phone/cable/internet companies of your new address as well. Some of these services can be updated online and others you may need to call the provider so that they can transfer your service.

Home/Renters Insurance Company

Be sure to notify your Home/Renters Insurance as soon as possible. If you are renting during your move, you may even want to consider renter’s insurance to protect your belongings. You will want to provide your insurance with start/stop dates for each residence as billing rates may vary from your last house to your new home. Or if you were renting, you’ll need to switch to home owner’s insurance if you just bought a house. Your home owner’s policy will also need to know your mortgage information so that they can be listed on your mortgage as the loss payee.

Your Employer

Even if you have direct deposit, you should notify your employer of your address change so that tax documents can be mailed to the correct address.

Your Bank/Credit Card Companies

Many banks and credit card companies will allow you to update your address online. However, if you have a home based business, you will likely need to go in-person to the local branch to update your mailing address.

Catalogues/Magazines

Some catalogues and magazines will automatically forward when you update your address with the USPS. If not, you will likely need to contact the customer service department of the company to notify them of your new address.

Online Accounts

Whether you have an Amazon, Costco, Nordstrom, etc. profile, you will need to go into each of your online accounts and update your shipping address. I’ve accidentally had packages sent to my old address as I’ve forgotten to update shipping and billing addresses.

Friends & Family

Once you’ve notified all of the above, now it’s time to let friends and family know that you’ve moved! This can be done with a fun greeting card announcement. We combined our “We’ve Moved” announcement with our holiday Christmas card since we moved right before the holidays.
