Episode 1: Introduction to The Backyard Bouquet Podcast

Welcome to the Backyard Bouquet Podcast, where stories bloom from local flower fields and home gardens. I’m your host, Jennifer Gulizia of The Flowering Farmhouse. In this first episode, I’m excited to share a little bit about my background in cut flowers and how the Backyard Bouquet podcast came to be.

I have loved flowers since I was a young child, growing up in a home with a beautifully landscaped yard filled with blooming flowers. One of my earliest memories of cut flowers is perhaps visiting my aunt and uncle’s house in Seattle, where they had a gorgeous garden that they would cut flowers from to fill their home with beautiful bouquets. This inspired me to dream of growing my own flowers and filling my home with bouquets from the backyard.

Cultivating A Cutting Garden In My Backyard

After graduating college, I moved into my first house in Portland, Oregon, where I had a small backyard. I started a small cutting garden and grew my very first flowers from clearance plants and cheap seed packets. Over the years, my love for flowers grew, and when my husband and I moved to Hood River, Oregon, we built a house with enough space for me to have my own garden. I went all out and planted 64 dahlia tubers, filling our yard with beautiful blooms. I had so many flowers that I started delivering bouquets to neighbors’ doorsteps.

In 2020, I enrolled in Floret’s online learning course and learned what it takes to become a backyard flower farmer. I started selling my flowers to local florists and offering subscriptions to my CSA.

Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to meet many amazing farms and backyard growers. I’ve realized that there is a need to share the stories of backyard gardeners and flower farmers. That’s when the idea for the Backyard Bouquet podcast was born.
