Are you growing more flowers than you can give away?
You love planting, tending, and harvesting blooms — but when it comes to selling your flowers, suddenly it feels overwhelming.
How do you price a bouquet? Where do you even start selling? And how do you feel confident asking for money for something you love doing?
You’re not alone. In fact, most flower farmers start with a deep love for growing and little idea how to turn that passion into profit.
In this week’s episode of The Backyard Bouquet Podcast, I sat down with Lennie Larkin, founder of Flower Farming for Profit and host of the upcoming Sell Your Flowers Summit, to talk about how to sell your flowers with confidence — even if you’re just getting started.

Why Selling Flowers Feels So Hard (and What to Do About It)
Many new farmers focus almost entirely on growing flowers — soil prep, seeding, irrigation, pests — but rarely practice the selling part until it’s too late.
Lennie shared something that hit home for me:
“You won’t magically figure out how to sell your flowers if you never practice selling. The same way you practice growing, you have to practice the business side.”
Start by reframing how you see sales. It’s not about being pushy; it’s about sharing beauty with your community. Each bouquet you sell is an invitation for someone else to experience the joy you feel when you’re out in the field.
Shift Your Mindset: Selling Is Service
Most of us feel awkward about selling because we associate it with being overly promotional. But as Lennie explains, when you sell flowers locally, you’re serving your community.
“Selling your flowers isn’t pushy or salesy. It’s connection. It’s storytelling. It’s how you share your joy and invite others into it.”
When you show up with genuine excitement and pride in your flowers, people feel that.
You’re not “selling” — you’re helping your community choose beauty, sustainability, and local connection over imported alternatives.

Pricing Your Bouquets Without Guilt
If you’ve ever hesitated to raise your prices, you’re not alone. But as Lennie reminded us, underpricing your flowers doesn’t serve anyone — not you, not your customers, and not the local flower movement.
“Keeping your prices low isn’t kind or supportive — it’s a fast track to burnout. You can do more good for your community by staying in business.”
When you price your bouquets fairly, you make it possible to keep growing — literally and financially.
Here are three pricing reminders for new flower farmers:
- Don’t compare yourself to grocery store prices. Imported flowers are grown under entirely different conditions.
- Remember your time, labor, and materials. Your bouquet isn’t “just flowers” — it’s expertise and artistry.
- Confident pricing helps elevate everyone in the local flower community.
Where to Sell Your Flowers (and Why Simplicity Wins)
When you’re starting out, it’s easy to get lost in options: markets, subscriptions, weddings, farm stands, wholesalers.
Lennie’s advice? Start simple.
“New flower farmers should begin by selling in front of someone else’s audience — like a farmers market or local business pop-up.”
That strategy builds awareness while reducing overwhelm. Once you’ve developed a following, you can transition into direct sales — like a farm stand or bouquet subscription.
Start here:
- 🌿 Partner with a local coffee shop or wine bar for weekend pop-ups.
- 🌸 Join a farmers market to meet potential customers face-to-face.
- 🌼 Start an email list and nurture those relationships for future sales.

Stop Comparing and Focus on Your Own Growth
It’s easy to look at what other farmers are doing and feel like you’re behind. But comparison only slows your growth.
“Your competition isn’t the farmer down the road — it’s the imported flowers at the grocery store. We need more local flower farmers, not fewer.”
When you focus on your unique story, your values, and your flowers, you attract the right customers — the ones who value what you do.
So next time you see another local grower selling bouquets, celebrate them. The more local flowers available, the more awareness we all create for this beautiful movement.
