Today marks 38 years around the sun and I’ve been taking some time to reflect on some of the things I’ve learned over the last year.

In the last year, my eyes have really been opened to two things in the flower farming industry that are very near and dear to my heart.

The first thing that is very near and dear to me is the local flower movement. Right now the majority of flowers you buy in supermarkets come from overseas where they are sprayed with harmful chemicals and dangerous pesticides. Labor conditions are also usually very poor where these flowers are grown. By the time you get these flowers, they are often over a week old. Plus, tons of carbon emissions are created in the process of transporting them to you.

Local flowers provide a safer alternative where they are a clean and long-lasting alternative to traditional sources. Plus, you support a local farmer and their family. Most local flowers were sourced either a day before or the same day you receive the flowers.

The other thing I’ve learned a lot about in the last year is about sustainable farming. So many of the traditional farming practices deplete our soil of natural resources, microorganisms, fungi, and bacteria. All of which are critical to our soil’s health. Soil fertility greatly impacts a plants ability to grow healthy and fend off disease.

Going into this next flower farming year, I’m committed to learning more ways that I can make a difference for the environment and be a sustainable flower farmer. We hear so much about climate change in the news, that I feel like this is my opportunity to do my part.

When we built this greenhouse several years ago, I had no idea that someday we’d have a 1 acre flower farm. I get so many questions about this greenhouse that I thought I’d take a moment and tell you a little bit about it.

This greenhouse is 8’x12’ and it’s amazing how many starts I can pack inside. Each spring I start all of my annuals from seed. This greenhouse was plenty big enough to hold all of my starts for our 1/4 acre flower farm.

This last year it became a little more challenging to fit everything inside, but I managed to start all of our seeds inside this greenhouse for 1/2 an acre! I did have grow lights inside our home and did lots of succession planting so as one batch was leaving the greenhouse to be planted in the field, another set of seeds were coming inside to germinate.

Looking into 2020, it’s going to be a little more challenging to fit a full acre worth of flower starts inside here. Thankfully a lot of our farm is dahlias so they do not need to go inside the greenhouse (I do put my dahlia seedlings inside here). I am also direct seeding and starting lots of cool season flowers directly outdoors this year.

My greenhouse is not heated. In the winter months I run an extension cord out to the greenhouse to provide heat and keep it above freezing. A small greenhouse heater keeps it plenty warm enough for all my early seedlings and geraniums I overwinter inside.

Someday I am probably going to need a 2nd greenhouse OR a hoop house. This year I’m adding caterpillar tunnels (low tunnel greenhouses) for many of my early spring flowers.

It’s sometimes hard to believe that my flower farming journey started right here with this small dahlia patch 3 summers ago. My first summer I grew just over 200 dahlias and sold bouquets at the farmers market.

The following summer I expanded our growing space to 1/4 acre and started selling wholesale to local florists and had a Floral C.S.A. (CSA stands for Community Support Agriculture). In 2020 we grew close to 500 dahlias along with lots of other flowers.

Fast forward to this past summer and I grew close to 1000 dahlias along with lots of other flowers on 1/2 an acre.

Now looking forward to 2022, we will be growing on over an acre with close to 3,000 dahlias. 3 years ago the thought of growing on this much space would have terrified me, now I feel confident and excited for next season. I already have so many flowers started that will be blooming in early spring.

My point is, if you’ve been dreaming of doing something, do it! Even if you start small, start now on working on your dreams. I’m so grateful that I started small and I’ve grown in size and knowledge each year on my journey.

Everyone thinks that a flower farmers job ends after a hard frost. Well that’s far from the truth. This time of year there’s so much happening all at once. We’ve been digging and washing dahlias, cleaning beds, planting peonies, preparing space for tulips and daffodils, and building caterpillar tunnels. Plus we’ve also been ordering seeds for 2022 growing season.

If you’ve been following my stories the past few days, you know that we’ve been busy building caterpillar tunnels before the weather turns cold. We have pre-sprouted over 1000 ranunculus corms and need to get them covered up for winter. These corms will produce gorgeous ranunculus come spring (like shown in this picture).

Did you know that ranunculus are sometimes referred to as “the poor man’s peony”? They kind of look like a miniature peony.

I’ve been so busy out in the field that I haven’t had much time to think about Thanksgiving or Christmas decor. I will be sharing some changes to our holiday decor soon! What about you? Are you still working on putting your garden to bed or are you in holiday mode?
