Growing dahlias from seed is an easy and inexpensi

Growing dahlias from seed is an easy and inexpensive way to grow your dahlia garden, but you should know these things first:
-Don’t start your seeds too early! You want to sow the seeds 4-6 weeks prior to your average last frost date.
-Each dahlia seed will produce a new variety.
-Most dahlia seeds will produce open centered dahlias
-Dahlia seeds will produce a dahlia that’s different than the parent seedling
-Dahlias grown from seed will produce a clump of tubers at the end of the season
-Breeders only keep a very small percentage of dahlias grown from seed. I keep less than 5% of all dahlias I grow from seed.

Are you interested in growing dahlias from seed? Growing dahlias from seed is an inexpensive way to grow your dahlia garden, but you should know these things first:
-Each dahlia seed will produce a new variety.

This here is one of my most promising 2022 dahlia seedlings. It’s a gorgeous blush ball dahlia that’s about 3 inches big. I am crossing my fingers that it stays true to form in 2023. If it does, I’ll grow it out for another year to build up the tuber stock before releasing it to the public.

Happy 1st day of spring! Everything feels behind schedule this year, but there’s definitely small signs all around showing that spring is coming.
Who remembers these bulbs we planted for our Pilot TV Episode on @bloomtv.network ? They just started blooming and are the perfect burst of color on the way to the greenhouse. They remind me that everything else will soon be blooming as well.
Daffodils are forming buds, tulips are emerging from crates, and the peonies are also popping up from their winter slumber. It’s going to be a gorgeous spring!

Flower farming can certainly be challenging at times, but it can also be so fulfilling in so many ways. These past 4+ years have been a wild journey and I’m so grateful to each and everyone of you who have chosen to follow along. This past week we had our 3rd annual dahlia tuber sale. Thank you to each and everyone of you who supported our sale. Your support allows us to buy early season supplies that help our farm run this year.

Today’s the big day! Our dahlia tuber sale goes

Today’s the big day! Our dahlia tuber sale goes live on our website at 9am PST today, Wednesday, March 15th.
Here’s a few reminders for our sale:
- All varieties will show “sold out” until 9AM PST on 3/15/23
- Dahlia mania is real. Varieties will likely sell out very quickly. Inventory is first-come, first-serve.
- A few varieties have a limit of 1 tuber per purchase
- All tubers have been grown here in Hood River at The Flowering Farmhouse
- Each listing is for one dahlia tuber
- Once your order is placed we can not make substitutions or additions. You will need to place another order.
- We do inspect and cull for disease
- We are licensed and inspected by the Department of Agriculture.
- Due to the volume of orders we receive, we are unable to combine shipping on separately placed orders.
- We are only able to ship within the U.S.(excluding Hawaii and Alaska). At this time international ordering is not available.
